What this function does

The subject's brightness changes gradually from shadows (the darker areas) to highlights (the brightest areas). This gradual change is called gradation. When the difference brightness in the picture is too large, depending on the exposure settings, the brightest areas can be overexposed or the darker areas can be underexposed and lack in detail. You may be able to use exposure compensation to bring out some gradation in the parts of the picture that lack detail, but other parts in the picture may suffer as a result. Instead you can use the [GRADATION] setting to change the brightness while keeping the gradation and bring out more detail in the picture by automatically adjusting the picture overall.
[NORMAL]
No gradation compensation is applied.
[HIGH KEY]
Compensates the gradation for a brighter overall picture without losing detail in the highlight areas.
[LOW KEY]
Compensates the gradation for a darker overall picture without losing detail in the shadow areas.
[AUTO]
Reduces over- and underexposure when taking pictures of high-contrast subjects resulting in pictures that look closer to real life. You can take pictures of that include both sunny and shaded areas or backlit subjects without losing the detail and gradation of either the brighter or the darker areas of the picture.
